How the Grok weekly limit works
Weighted by compute, reported only as a percentage.
The Grok weekly limit is one pool that feeds everything paid. Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build all draw from the same budget, weighted by compute — a text message costs a tiny fraction of what a video generation costs. xAI never tells you the pool's absolute size. You get a percentage in Settings → Usage, and that's it.
It resets every 7 days on a schedule specific to your account. There is no universal reset day; the date next to your usage meter is the only one that matters. The pool model arrived in June 2026, replacing separate per-product daily limits. Upside: spend it all on whatever you like. Downside: the same sentence.
Run it to zero and paid features pause until the reset. You're not locked out entirely: free-tier Chat and Voice keep working on their own separate quota, which is why Grok answering you is no proof your week refilled. If waiting isn't an option, Extra Usage Credits buy you back in.
Weekly usage pool
The one number that matters on SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy. Everything paid spends from it, weighted by compute, and xAI reports it only as a percentage. It resets weekly on your account's own schedule, shown in Settings → Usage. At zero, paid features pause until the week turns over.
Free-tier Chat and Voice
A separate quota that keeps working after the paid pool runs dry. xAI doesn't publish its caps — officially it just resets on its own schedule, and community reports describe a short rolling window. Don't plan a workday around it.
Extra Usage Credits
Top-up money: a purchased balance consumed once your weekly included usage is gone. It never resets, and Auto Top Up can refill it automatically up to a monthly cap you set. Currently web-only; mobile purchase is promised but not shipped.
xAI API billing
The API side is a separate wallet: prepaid credits are consumed before any postpaid usage accrues, and postpaid runs against a monthly invoiced limit. At the default $0 limit, requests are rejected the moment credits run out — a hard stop, not a warning.
What Headroom shows for Grok
The same numbers Settings → Usage has, without the tab. If xAI reshapes the limits again, new rows appear automatically, tagged new.
One number by the clock
While you're burning the pool, the tray shows percent left. Amber at your warning threshold, red at critical. Click it and the flyout adds per-product shares — what Imagine ate, what Chat sipped.
A warning before the wall
Cross your threshold and one Windows toast tells you what's left and when it comes back. One more at critical, a six-hour cooldown per quota, and stale data never notifies.
The API side, same instinct
Add a team-scoped xAI Management key and month-to-date team spend becomes a meter against the budget you set, prepaid balance alongside. Prepaid runs out before postpaid begins — worth seeing coming.
Grok limit questions
When does my SuperGrok weekly limit reset?
Weekly, on a schedule specific to your account. Open Settings → Usage on grok.com and the reset date sits next to the percentage meter. There is no universal reset day or time, so any ‘resets every Monday’ claim you read elsewhere is wrong for most accounts.
What happens when I hit my Grok weekly limit?
Paid features pause until your week resets. You fall back to free-tier Chat and Voice, which run on a separate quota with its own schedule, so Grok keeps answering — just without the paid features. If you can't wait: Extra Usage Credits ($5 minimum, currently web-only), Auto Top Up, or a plan upgrade.
Does Grok Imagine count toward the weekly limit?
Yes. Since June 2026, everything paid — Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and the smaller products — draws from one shared weekly pool, weighted by compute. A video generation costs far more of the pool than a text message, so a long Imagine session can leave nothing for chat until your reset.
Why is my Grok weekly limit not resetting?
Check the date in Settings → Usage first; it's account-specific and usually later than people assume. Users also report a short rolling rate limit on paid plans that recovers on its own and is easy to mistake for the weekly pool, plus occasional stale meters that a re-login fixes. If the printed reset date has passed and nothing refilled, that's one for xAI support.
How big is the weekly pool in messages or videos?
xAI doesn't say. The pool is only ever displayed as a percentage, and different actions cost different amounts of compute, so there's no fixed message count to publish. Community estimates circulate; they're unofficial and they drift. Treat any absolute number you read as a guess.
How do I check my Grok usage percentage?
